Dimitrios Soukaras joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after he won our Ivor Mairants Guitar Award 2019. Here he performs songs by John Dowland and William Walton's Allegro from the Five Bagatelles. Dimitrios says: "In my programme for the #MusiciansCoYoungArtists #MiddayMusic I am focusing on music by two important figures of the two Elizabethan periods. John Dowland’s songs, fantasias and galliards are a true treasure of the lute/guitar repertoire. I chose three of my favourite melodies by him. William Walton was inspired by the great guitarist Julian Bream to write the Five Bagatelles. Here I perform the first bagatelle, which is the most energetic and vivid: with its rhythmicality I believe it creates a perfect contrast to Dowland’s melancholic atmosphere." Dimitrios Soukaras is a Greek guitarist currently based in London. He holds a MA and Adv.Dip. from the #RoyalAcademyofMusic in London (the highest performance award conferred by the RAM). He is the winner of 21 international Awards, and is the founder and Artistic Director of ΜUΣA Concert Series, which is a Music Festival in Corinth (GR) promoting young artists and new projects from different genres of music. As a soloist, he has performed with Ionio Symphony Orchestra as well as the Athens Mandoline Orchestra, and has appeared in festivals in Greece and across Europe.
