Emily Mitchell (trumpet): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic
Emily Mitchell joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after being awarded our #RoyalAcademyofMusic Brass Ensemble Prize in 2017 with London Metropolitan Brass. Here she performs 'The "Reform" of Rank Bajin' by Geddes.
Emily says:
"This unaccompanied work for trumpet is a music portrayal of Rank Bajin, the resident villain from a comic strip by Scottish cartoonist Bud Neill. In the comic strips, Rank Bajin is initially a feared and evil cowboy, who is relentlessly pursued by the sheriff. Bajin eventually sees the error of his ways and later comic strips show him collecting for charities such as 'Roller Skates for Indigent Gas-Meter Readers' and 'Alcoholics Unanimous'.
In this piece the trumpet player is required to create effects such as horse-whinnies and evil laughter. During the piece a struggle develops between Bajin’s wild-western ways and his efforts to redeem himself. After the culmination of this struggle, Geddes writes to ‘look regretful’ in imitation of Rank Bajin realising the evil nature of his previous behaviours.
This piece is incredible creative which I think is very relevant to the current situation. Musicians up and down the country have been turning to very creative alternatives to their usual performances. It is also very entertaining and I think everyone needs something positive at the moment, even if that is just to laugh at the costume!
My name is Emily Mitchell and I became a Young Artist of The Musicians' Company in 2017 as part of the brass quintet London Metropolitan Brass. I graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2019 and The "Reform" of Rank Bajin is a piece I performed in my final recital. Since lockdown I have been keeping busy arranging pieces for quintet, making virtual ensemble videos for various youth bands, and training my puppy to dance."
