Matilda Lloyd (trumpet): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Matilda Lloyd joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning a Musicians' Company Award in 2018. Here she performs Andre Jolivet’s 'Air de Bravoure' and 'Elegy' by Alexander Arutiunian. Matilda says: "Winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final led to my BBC Proms solo debut in 2016 with the BBC Philharmonic, and winning the Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition in 2017 established me abroad, leading to my international debut in France with the l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. Since then I have performed with orchestras in the USA, South Africa and Germany and in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall. I am currently studying with Håkan Hardenberger in Sweden, having graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2019. During the lockdown period, I have moved down to my parents’ house in the countryside in Kent. Alongside the beautiful surroundings, one of the things I am most grateful for is that I’ve been able to play with my mother: a piano teacher and accompanist. She used to accompany me in all my exams, concerts and competitions up until the age of 18, including at the BBC Young Musician in 2014, so it has been lovely to be able to make music together again. I chose these two works as they are very different in style, but are both very relevant to today. The first, Andre Jolivet’s 'Air de Bravoure' is a musical representation of bravery or courage. In these uncertain times, this is something that we all need to have and I think that this piece brilliantly sums up that emotion in music! The second work is 'Elegy' by Alexander Arutiunian and it is much more reflective in style. With long lyrical musical lines and a gentle rocking 9/8 feel, it is generally quite sad in mood, however it occasionally moves into a major key, providing rays of sunshine and hope. In many years we will all look back on this period, and despite all the struggles, I hope that there will be moments that we can treasure or remember with fondness." -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - http://www.wcom.org.uk/yeoman/matilda-lloyd Musicians' Company interview (2019) - http://www.wcom.org.uk/news/matilda-lloyd-on-the-rise-of-female-trumpet-players About our Musicians' Company Award - http://www.wcomarchive.org.uk/--allcard-funds Matilda's Website - http://www.matildalloyd.com Matilda's Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/matildalloydcamtrumpet Matilda's Instagram - http://www.instagram.com/matildalloydtrumpet Matilda's Twitter - http://twitter.com/matildalloydtpt Matilda's YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRm9Z4-_nCxqpIUCnznGoiQ -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at http://eepurl.com/dv0ccr #MiddayMusic is supported by funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
