Rosie Lavery (soprano): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Rosie Lavery (soprano) joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning the Musicians' Company Saloman Seelig Award in 2020. Here she performs Aaron Copland’s '12 Poems of Emily Dickinson' and 'Heart we will forget him', and Menotti's 'Monica’s Waltz' with Mark Rogers on piano. Rosie says: "I chose my American song programme today as a distraction from the confusing times we find ourselves in. I wanted to use this recital to find the joy in performing again, and to provide a small insight into the beautiful repertoire written by American composers Copland and Menotti. Written in 1950, Aaron Copland’s '12 Poems of Emily Dickinson' is one of my favourite song cycles of all time. In the first piece, it always makes me laugh when I sing the line “Why do they shut me out of heaven – did I sing too loud” as I am almost always singing it far too loud!... It is an absolute joy to sing. However, I must say, 'Heart we will forget him' is possibly one of my favourite pieces of all time. I have often said if I could only sing one piece forevermore, it would be this one. The aria 'Monica’s Waltz' has always felt to me like an entire opera in the space of an aria. From playing with puppets, to despair, to true love, to childlike awe at the world around us, this piece really has it all. As I’m sure you will all agree, the music itself is so stunning and moves me differently every time I sing it. I, Rosie Lavery, am a self-proclaimed ‘Ginger Soprano’, currently studying on the MMus Vocal Studies course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under the tutelage of Clare Shearer. I am delighted to be the recipient of the Musicians Company Saloman Seelig Award 2020, a Britten-Pears Young Artist 2020 and is also a Dewar Arts Young Artist 2020. Recently, I won the prestigious Governor’s Recital Prize at RCS and was placed in the High Robertson Scots Song Competition and the French Song Competition. I am very grateful to continue to perform recital programmes around Scotland, in venues such as Dundee Caird Hall, The House of an Art Lover and Institut Français." -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - http://www.wcom.org.uk/yeoman/rosie-lavery About our Musicians' Company awards - http://www.wcom.org.uk/awards/musicians-company-awards-including-busenhart-morgan-evans-and-david-goldman-awards Rosies's Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/rosielavery.co.uk -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at http://eepurl.com/dv0ccr #MiddayMusic is supported by generous donations from the public, along with funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
