Steven McIntyre (Organ): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Steven McIntyre joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after being awarded our Silver Medal at the Royal College of Organists #RCOFilms in 2019. Here he performs Toccata in D minor by Dietrich Buxtehude. Steven says: "Today I perform the Toccata in D minor by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707). I have been extremely fortunate to have regular access to the amazing Flentrop organ (1990) in Dunblane Cathedral throughout lockdown. This instrument is an ideal vehicle for music of the North German school of organists and this piece formed part of my lockdown learning of Buxtehude’s major organ works. This particular piece is a real trail-blazer: the opening section surely inspired the more famous Toccata in d minor attributed to J.S. Bach, and the pedal writing would have been amongst the most energetic and ambitious of anything written at that time. The drama of this piece, in the Stylus Phantasticus, lies in the dialogue between its sections; contrasting between the improvisatory and brilliant, plaintive homophony and robust fugal counterpoint. I hope my playing and the tonal palette of this instrument help characterise this interplay and drama for those listening. I studied with Kevin Bowyer, John Butt and privately with George McPhee whilst reading Music at the University of Glasgow before pursuing postgraduate studies in Music education. I am a Fellow of both Trinity College London and the Royal College of Organists. For the latter, I received the Limpus, Shinn and Durrant prize alongside the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. I have performed across the UK and in the USA and recently recorded a CD, with Cappella Nova, of choral and organ works by Sir James MacMillan. I am fortunate to currently combine teaching in rural Stirlingshire with the role of assistant organist at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow." -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - About our Silver Medals - Steven's YouTube - -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at #MiddayMusic is supported by funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
