The Musicians’ Company is a City of London Livery Company, being 50th in order of precedence. Find out more about Livery Companies here. Historically, membership of the Musicians’ Company conferred the right for professional musicians to practise their art within the confines of the City of London.
Today, membership is welcomed from anyone interested in actively preserving high quality music for future generations, whether they are a professional musician or simply passionate about music. Members are able to attend a variety of different events run by the Company. The Musicians’ Company, whilst focused on the City of London, is international and is always keen to admit new members, men and women. Our Members also help gifted musicians benefit from a raft of support including our scholarships, prizes, medals and performance opportunities, and help spread the life-affirming benefits of music through community engagement and outreach.
There are two levels of membership: Freemen and Liverymen. Members first joining become Freemen, which allows participation in many Company activities and events. Freemen are invited to become Liverymen after a few years of membership, once commitment to the Company and its work have been demonstrated. This influential title gives access to all Company social events, many other Livery and City functions and grants entitlement to vote for the Sheriffs and Lord Mayor of the City of London.
