Biography

Isle of Lewis-born mezzo-soprano, Caitlin Mackenzie, is a recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she is now studying for her Master’s degree under the tutelage of Elizabeth McCormack.

 

Caitlin began singing as a member of the NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) Isle of Lewis area choir at the age of 8 and has worked her way through their National Girls Choir, NYCOS Training Choir and now sings with their flagship touring choir and Chamber Choir. Performance highlights with NYCOS include opening the Edinburgh International Festival singing Haydn’s The Creation with Edward Gardner, BerliozLelio with Sir John Eliot Gardiner in Carnegie Hall, New York, and, most notably, performing in the ensemble of West Side Story at the Edinburgh International Festival. Most recently, Caitlin was a soloist in Britten’s Hymn to St Cecilia with NYCoS Chamber Choir, at their Lammermuir Festival performance in September 2023.

 

Prior to starting her undergraduate degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Caitlin also attended the RCS Junior Conservatoire for two years. During her studies at the RCS, Caitlin has worked with Christopher Underwood, Mary King, Karen Cargill, Rachel Nicholls and Beth Taylor, in coaching sessions and masterclasses. Most recently, Caitlin was awarded Second place in the Hugh S Roberton Scots song competition and was also selected as an emerging artist for Dunedin Consort’s Bridging the Gap Scheme for 2023/24.

 

Caitlin has thoroughly enjoyed working as a soloist and collaborating with various different community choirs such as Ayr Choral Union, Greenock Philharmonic Society, Hutcheson’s Choral Society and Arran Arts Festival. With these groups she has sung solos in Haydn’s The Creation, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Dove’s The Armed Man and a variety of repertoire for Christmas concerts, with a range of piano, organ, brass band and orchestral accompaniment. She also regularly sings in services at Glasgow Cathedral, led by Andrew Forbes.
