Charles Tam
Biography
Charles Tam is a London-based concert pianist currently a Fellow in Piano Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying under Ronan O’Hora. Prior to that, he studied with Raymond Young and Gabriel Kwok at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Peter Bithell and Carole Presland at the Guildhall School.
Charles is an active performer and has been invited to give performances in prestigious venues and festivals, including the Wigmore Hall, Barbican, Newbury Corn Exchange, Esterházy Palace, Hong Kong City Hall and etc.. Among these was an all-Rachmaninoff piano recital at the Hong Kong Art Festival Plus in February 2018. In 2016, he was invited by the Vienna Boys’ Choir to take part in the “All Beethoven Sonatas” series at the Vienna Music Festival alongside other pianists from Hong Kong and Vienna. Charles has given performances extensively in Malaysia, St. Petersburg, Salzburg, Vienna, Eisenstadt, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Macau, Shantou, London, Serbia and the Netherlands. He has also performed with different orchestras such as the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Orchestra and Belgrade Symphony Orchestra.
Charles has worked with many great artists, including Aquiles Delle-Vigne, Christopher Elton, Peter Donohoe, Arie Vardi, Stephen Hough, Imogen Cooper, Paul Lewis and Dang Thai Son. He is also an awardee of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund’s Scholarship in 2019. He has garnered numerous accolades both nationally and internationally. These include 1st prize and best etude award at the young artist class of Malaysia UCSI International Piano Festival and Competition in 2014; Silver Prize in the General Class of the 16th Chopin International Piano Competition ASIA in Japan in 2015; Third prize at the 9th Serbia Isidor-Bajic International Piano Memorial Competition; the Glass Sellers’ Company Beethoven Piano Prize in 2019; second prize and Carola Grindea Audience Prize at the BPSE Senior Intercollegiate Piano Competition in 2021; first prize and Audience Prize at the Sheepdrove Piano Competition in 2021, and top prize at the 6th Hong Kong International Piano Competition 2023.
Outside of the practice rooms and concert halls, Charles enjoys cooking and has a penchant for Italian and Spanish cuisine.
