Biography

Welsh tenor, Huw Ynyr graduated with distinction from the M.MUS Performance course at the University of Wales, Bangor, in 2015 and continues his vocal studies on the M.A Opera Performance course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, under the tutelage of Adrian Thompson.

Whilst at Bangor University, Huw made his opera début in the Title Role of their production of Cavalli’s Egisto. Recent engagements at RWCMD include Tamino in The Magic Flute and Ramiro in La Cenerentola. In opera scenes at RWCMD, he has performed Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte; Lionel in Martha; Prunier in La Rondine and Acis in Acis and Galatea.  This season, Huw joins Opra Cymru as Ernesto in a Welsh language adaptation of Don Pasquale. Huw recently performed in a concert to celebrate the 90th birthday of harpist Osian Ellis at Pontio, Bangor with Sir Bryn Terfel, highlights of which were broadcast on BBC Radio Cymru.

Among his concert highlights are performing alongside Sir Bryn Terfel and former Royal Harpists, Hannah Stone and Rhianwen Pugh and a RWCMD Gala Concert conducted by Carlo Rizzi. He is a popular soloist in oratorio and his concert repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Stainer’s Crucifixion and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Huw has appeared as guest artist in the S4C television concert series ‘Noson Lawen’ for S4C and has recorded for BBC Radio Cymru.  Huw recently won the 2018 Janet Price Opera Prize; The Aneurin Davies Memorial Award; E A Redman Interpretation Prize; Eileen Price Prize for Lieder Singing and in 2017 was awarded the RWCMD’s Dame Shirley Bassey scholarship.  Other prizes include first prize in the Tenor Solo under twenty five years of age at the 2016 National Eisteddfod of Wales and he was also joint-recipient of the Eirwen Griffiths Jones Memorial Scholarship – a scholarship awarded to the most promising soloist between 19-25 years old. In 2012 he won the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel Scholarship.
