Biography

Maia Roberts, originally from south Cornwall, began learning the flute aged 7. By the age of 10 she was performing publicly and completed her grade 8 with distinction when she was 12.

Throughout her time in Cornwall she was heavily involved in the thriving music scene as part of the Cornwall youth orchestras for 7 years and gained success in county competitions, winning the rotary west Cornwall young musician of the year as well as the grade 8 class, concerto class and highest mark of the festival at the Cornwall county music festival.

Since 2021 Maia has been studying her undergraduate at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a scholarship, under Marie-Christine Zupancic, Andrew Lane, Helen Benson and Alena Walentin. During her time studying in Birmingham Maia has won the Leamington music prize, the British flute society Piccolo award and been a finalist in the Birmingham Philharmonic Concerto prize.

In her 1st and 3rd years Maia was awarded a place on the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra training scheme and has also had the opportunity to sit in with the Welsh National Opera Orchestra.

Maia is heavily involved with the LEAP ensemble taking part in outreach work across the country, bringing music to thousands of children and working closely with students as a mentor.

She has also been lucky enough to receive support from the James Langley Memorial Trust and Maddocks Mills trusts to fund a new Piccolo and instrument repairs during her studies.

Some notable performances include: with the CBSO for a Hansel and Gretel outreach project, at the Royal Shakespeare Company and as a guest artist with the Atea Quintet.
