Biography
Aries was born in Hong Kong and started studying the violin at the age of 6. He was a Junior Music Program scholar at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), where he studied with Mr. Leung Kin Fung. He recently graduated from the Royal College of Music with First Class Honours, completing the Bachelor of Music (Hons) under the tutelage of Prof. Madeleine Mitchell. In June 2021, he made his solo debut with the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra performing the Chausson Poème at the Hong Kong City Hall.
Aries is an enthusiastic orchestral and chamber musician. In 2018 and 2019, he was chosen to participate in the Asian Youth Orchestra’s concert tour on a full scholarship basis as the youngest member, performing in over 30 concerts on tour. He was also appointed as the Chairman of the Diocesan Boys’ School Strings Orchestra, performing at the Musikverein (Vienna), the Municipal House (Prague), and the Vigadó Concert Hall (Budapest). Since 2023, he has taken up the role as the project lead of the Hong Kong Youth Philharmonia, after serving as the concertmaster previously. He has led the University of London Symphony Orchestra since 2021 and the Ponte London Orchestra since its inauguration. He also performs regularly as the guest concertmaster of the London Shostakovich Orchestra.
During his study at the RCM, Aries has performed with the college’s symphony orchestra and opera productions, working closely with distinguished conductors such as Sir Andrew Davis, Martyn Brabbins, Håkan Hardenberger, and Michael Rosewell. He is also an active musician with the Abbey Road Institute and has participated in movie projects and recordings with conductors including Ben Palmer.
Aries is the co-founder of the Hongs Quartet and has performed in numerous masterclasses with Maestros such as Marc Danel, Pierre Colombet, Gerhard Schulz, and Luc-Marie Aguera. Hongs quartet was selected for the Schiermonnikoog Festival in 2023 and was then accepted into the Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie (NSKA) later that year.
Aries is excited to continue his studies at the Royal College of Music, where he will begin his Master of Music in Performance (MMus Perf) with Prof. Gaby Lester, as the recipient of the Musicians’ Company Goldman Award.
