Harry Rylance (piano): The Musicians’ Company Young Artists’ Programme #MusicShots

Harry Rylance (piano) joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning our Silver Medal for the Royal Academy of Music in 2020. Here he performs the following programme:

Freya Waley-Cohen (b 1989): Southern Leaves

Wagner/Liszt: Overture to Tannhäuser

Harry says:

"Freya’s Southern Leaves is a piece I discovered only recently, despite having enjoyed working on several of Freya’s works including an entire opera this past year, and it is one that instantly grabbed me from the opening chords (especially as I had been listening to some Nina Simone just a few weeks prior). As an advocate of new music I am always looking for new works that are relevant in the current situation of the world.

The Wagner/Liszt Tannhauser Overture is a piece that I worked on along with many other operatic transcriptions this year. Having lived in Hungary for several years, I have always felt connected to Liszt, and his arrangement of the Tannhauser Overture may be one of my new favourites out of his warhorses.

I chose these pieces because of two main reasons. The first being that I have become fascinated by transcriptions and arrangements, especially of vocal or operatic material. The second reason is that I enjoy repertoire that clicks with me and instantly transports me into a unique world straight from the first notes. Although I personally find that both these pieces fit into these categories, it is safe to say they are still wildly contrasting and unique in their own ways."
