Jani Silva (percussion): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Jani Silva joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning our Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Trust Special Award in 2020. Here she performs 'Full Steam' by José Antonio Moreno Romero. Jani says: 'Hi and welcome to this #MiddayMusic concert! My name is Jani Silva and I am currently studying at the #RoyalAcademyofMusic. I am a percussion masters student and I am going to graduate in July of 2021. I am excited to be working with The Musician's Company Young Artists' Programme. 'Full Steam' was inspired by a percussionist and it was made to be performed in a nervous, powerful, energetic, fast, melodic and rhythmic style between the tom toms. As it progresses, the tension and rhythm grows, imitating a steam engine. There is a contrasting slow part in the middle section and it progresses very quickly to the final part where it becomes more impressive and explosive, reflecting the title - 'Full Steam'. During this pandemic, it was very hard for me to practice because I don't have instruments at home and my self-esteem started to go down. After some weeks of searching, I found this multi-percussion piece and for some reason it caught my attention. I started to listen and I immediately felt better, making me want to try to play this piece even without having instruments (I started to practice this on 6 pillows). The name of this solo says everything to me - it made me want to work harder because it reminded me that we need to be on full steam mode everyday in order to achieve our goals and dreams." Jani Silva is currently a Master percussion student at the Royal Academy of Music. Making her debut as a soloist with the Classical Orchestra of Madeira in 2018, Jani is now working/studying with one of the best percussionists in the music world such as Colin Currie, Joe Locke and top orchestral musicians. Her current teachers are Andrew Barclay (LPO-principal percussionist) and Tony Bedewi (BBC Symphony Orchestra- principal timpanist). Throughout her studies she has participated in several masterclasses with prestigious percussionists and is now a guest orchestral percussionist of the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra and the London Shostakovich Orchestra. Jani is sponsored by The Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Music Trust Special Award and by The Countess of Munster Trust, having also received an Entrance Scholarship by the Royal Academy of Music. -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - http://www.wcom.org.uk/yeoman/madeleine-pickering -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at http://eepurl.com/dv0ccr #MiddayMusic is supported by generous donations from the public, along with funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
