Julia Hwang (Violin): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic
Julia Hwang joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning our Concordia Foundation Artists' Fund award in 2019. Here she performs Lutoslawski's Subito and Debussy's Clair de lune, arranged for violin by Roelens. Her pianist is Charles Matthews.
Julia says:
"I chose the two pieces for very personal reasons. Subito is very sudden, unexpected, and chaotic; elements that seem to depict the arrival and subsequent spread of the pandemic in our community. Lutoslawski composed this piece in 1994 for the Indianapolis Violin Competition, with a special grant from the World Life and Accident Association.
Clair de lune is the complete opposite. The piece, composed by Debussy for the piano and arranged for the violin by Roelens, is so serene, soft, and very much like the moonlight it represents. I hope the piece offers some comfort for those affected by the pandemic."
Julia gave her debut with the English National Baroque Chamber Orchestra aged 9, and performed with the RPO by the age of 12. She has recently debuted at the #WigmoreHall, and recorded three CDs, the latest of which was critically acclaimed by Gramophone. She is a Fulbright Scholar, and is studying under Ani Kavafian at the University of Yale. She was a scholar at St John’s College, Cambridge, and graduated from the #RoyalCollegeofMusic with the highest performance mark of the year. Her past teachers include Richard Crabtree and Itzhak Rashkovsky.
She is honoured to be a cultural ambassador for BRACE Alzheimer’s Research and the Concordia Foundation (#ConcordiaLondon), and hopes to carry on philanthropic work through and after the pandemic. She plays on a Peter Guarnerius of Mantua violin c.1688, on generous loan from the Alderson Trust.
