Madeleine Pickering (violin): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Madeleine Pickering joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning our Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Trust Special Award in 2019. Here she performs from Bach’s D minor Partita for Solo Violin. Madeleine says: "Today I will perform from Bach’s D minor Partita for Solo Violin, BWV 1004: III. Sarabanda and IV: Giga. Bach’s solo violin repertoire brought me a lot of solace over the lockdown period while playing music with others was out of the question. This Sarabande is beautifully calm and reflective, with moments of brightness and hope breaking through from the overall melancholy mood. The Giga in contrast is great fun; a whirlwind of semiquavers that travel along Bach’s ingenious harmonic writing. I hope you enjoy both of these movements!" Madeleine won the Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Trust Special Award in 2019, when she also became a Musician’s Company Young Artist. She is a scholar at the #RoyalAcademyofMusic in London, where she has been studying since 2015 with Professor Maureen Smith and Visiting Professor Tasmin Little. Madeleine won first prize in the #RoyalAcademyofMusic Theodore Holland Viola Prize in 2016, and in 2020 she won the #RoyalAcademyofMusic Winifred Small Solo Violin Prize, performing Ysaye Sonata No.6. As well as giving solo performances across the UK, Madeleine plays professionally with the #LSO, having been a participant on the #LSO String Scheme in 2019, and is first violinist of the Ametza Quartet. -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at #MiddayMusic is supported by funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
