Petr Sedlák (bassoon): The Musicians’ Company #MiddayMusic

Petr Sedlák joined the Musicians' Company Young Artists' Programme after winning a Musicians' Company Award in 2020. Here he performs Gordon Jacob's Partita for Solo Bassoon and Malcolm Arnold's Fantasy for Bassoon. Petr says: "I chose this programme as a tribute to two English composers that at some point of their lives spent time at the Royal College of Music. Gordon Jacob was a pupil of Ralph Vaughan Williams at the RCM where he was a professor later in his life for more than 40 years. His Partita for Solo Bassoon was composed in 1970 and dedicated to William Waterhouse, a distinguished English bassoonist and a scholar. The Partita consists of five short movements, each exhibiting its own unique character. Today you will hear first three movements - Preludio, Valse and Presto. One of Jacob’s pupils was Malcolm Arnold who studied both trumpet and composition before joining the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His Fantasy for Bassoon is also part of the key repertoire for solo bassoon. It was commissioned by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the Birmingham International Wind Competition, May 1966. I am a Czech-born bassoonist studying in London. I graduated from Brno Conservatoire before joining the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Julie Price, Sarah Burnett, Emily Hultmark, Andrea de Flammineis, Joost Bosdijk, Roberto Giaccaglia and Martin Field. My Bachelor programme was massively supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, RCM Scholarships, Bakala Foundation and Hattori Foundation. This year I am very thankful to have been supported with my Master of Music by the Musicians’ Company. I am a very enthusiastic orchestra and chamber player, currently holding a position at orchestral academy with Czech Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestra (Sit-in scheme). I am also on trial for Sub-Principal bassoon at BBC Philharmonic." -------------------------------------------------- Musicians' Company Profile - About our Musicians' Company awards - -------------------------------------------------- Join our weekly #MiddayMusic e-news at #MiddayMusic is supported by generous donations from the public, along with funds from the Musicians' Company’s Prince’s Prize which received a generous endowment in 2015 from The Eranda Rothschild Foundation and Rothschilds Bank, in memory of Leopold de Rothschild, a Liveryman of the Musicians’ Company for over 50 years.
